About United People’s Freedom Alliance
United People's Freedom Alliance UPFA), undoubtedly the broadest coalition of progressive forces in the country. This coalition, which came into being in 2004 upon a platform of new liberal socio economic programme and a resolve to defeat separatist terrorism, has since mobilized people around a social democratic agenda. The overall policy statement of the Alliance is perhaps best captured in the manifesto put before the people by President Mahinda Rajapaksa during the 2005 Presidential Election; 'Mahinda Chinthana', is today the key policy guideline of the Government of Sri Lanka.
The United People's Freedom Alliance, since the Parliamentary Election of 2004 and the Presidential Election in the following year has scored comprehensive victories in all local government and provincial council elections, attracting to its fold political parties and groups from across the political spectrum. It is therefore the broadest and strongest coalition of political forces seen in this country in several decades.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the Chairman of the Alliance which Education Minister Susil Premajayantha is its Secretary.
